Apply for Deborah E. Trautman Future Nurse Leader Scholarship 

The Deborah E. Trautman Future Nurse Leader Scholarship is funded by Liaison International, which is a partner of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in NursingCAS.

It was started to honor AACN’s President and CEO, Dr. Deborah Trautman. The scholarship supports graduate nursing students aiming for leadership roles in academic nursing.

Eligible Nursing Degrees:

  • Entry Level Masters/Direct Entry MSN
  • MSN
  • DNP
  • PhD

Scholarship Amount:

It’s a  $3,500 scholarship award to two students annually. The award is broken down as follows:

  • $2,000 to cover educational expenses which is sent directly to the student.
  • $1,500 to cover travel expenses for a three-day leadership development program to participate in a one-on-one leadership development experience with Dr. Trautman at AACN’s headquarters in Washington, DC

Deborah E. Trautman Future Nurse Leader Scholarship Eligibility & Requirements:

  • Open to students in master’s or doctoral nursing programs offered at AACN member schools affiliated with NursingCAS, the centralized application service for nursing programs.
  • You must have a strong academic record.
  • You must demonstrate previous experience showing dedication to academic nursing.
  • You must be currently enrolled and in good standing at your school of nursing. 
  • You must be a member of AACN’s Graduate Nursing Student Academy (membership is free).

How to Apply:

  • A concise essay (no more than 500 words) outlining career achievements, your desire to aspire to a future leadership position in academia, and your vision for academic nursing.
  • A CV or resume that includes key milestones related to your leadership and career development (i.e. conference attendance, poster presentations, publications, etc.)
  • Goals (3-4 bullets) for what you hope to achieve during the leadership development experience with Dr. Trautman.
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from the nursing school dean or director.
  • A signed commitment statement agreeing to complete the leadership development component of this program. Failure to complete this requirement will forfeit your scholarship funding.
